The Customer

This leading further education college is located in central London and, through cutting-edge facilities and resources, it delivers a wide range of courses to some 7,000 full-time and part-time students each year, including both young people and adults.

The Situation

  • Customer required upgrade to latest versions of VMware vSphere and Horizon desktop virtualisation infrastructure to maintain optimum support and maintenance
  • Complete upgrade within specified timescale during school term break period to minimise possible disruption to staff and students

Our Approach

  • Carry out a current state assessment of the existing solution, assess upgrade design options, conduct pre-flight checks and implement upgrade plan using Xtravirt’s proven blueprint
  • Upgrade Horizon View Connection Servers and Security Servers from 5.2 to 6.1.1, vCenter Server to version 6.0, and all hosts to ESXi 5.5
  • Carry out commissioning tests including Xtravirt’s Sonar automated vSphere and Horizon post-upgrade assessment report

Outcomes Achieved

  • Successful upgrade of customer’s 4,000 seat virtual desktop solution, including vCenter, vSphere and Horizon View
